| Personal History | Meghan grew up on a small colony where her father was a wood carver and her mother a weaver. She watched her parents work, and gained a basic understanding of both crafts, but neither really caught her interest. She spent a good deal of time in the woods and learned about the different plants and trees, which ones were beneficial and which harmful. At first she wanted to become a botanist, but as she learned about the other worlds of the Federation and their history, she found herself spending more and more time learning about the ancient past. Her own colony had only been in existence for a hundred years, so she studied what she could online. She would still spend time in the woods where she could sing to the birds and dance among the trees, but as she grew older, her desire to leave home and see more of the universe grew. While her parents preferred that she stay with them, they understood her need to spread her wings and helped her get a scholarship to a university in the neighboring system where she studied history, ancient civilizations, and archaeology. For fun, she took dance classes and learned to play the flute. When she graduated, she had a choice of going on to get a graduate degree, teach, or find a job in her field. She chose instead to apply to Starfleet. She could have gone through the SOCS program, but there was still so much she didn't know about the Federation and about space, so she decided to apply to the Academy. As she already had a degree, she was able to skip some of her first year courses and focus on science and botany, and especially learn more about the history of other worlds. With three years in the Academy, she was finally feeling like she knew what she was doing—at least enough to accept a position on a cadet cruise. It would give her some much-needed hands-on experience. She had a good deal of book learning, but she still wasn't comfortable with her ability to work on a starship outside a lab or arboretum, so she jumped at the chance to add more to her understanding. She is a strong telepath. Her father is half Betazoid and half Italian. Her mother is a full Betazoid. She spent more of her childhood at home using her telepathy. She likes people, but sometimes words are not adequate to convey what she feels, but she's trying. |
